US Copyright Registration
Essentially, as soon as you complete your manuscript it is copyrighted by you. If your country is a signatory to the Berne Convention then you automatically own the copyright in any literary or creative work that you make yourself. In general, your copyright is protected in the countries that are signatories to the Convention as well. And while there is no need to place the © symbol on your works, it is advisable as it acts as an alert to other people that you claim your copyright rights over the written work.
- This protection covers all of Western Europe, the USA and Canada, Russia, Australia and New Zealand, and many other countries. You can find a list of all the country signatories at WIPO's site: http://www.wipo.int/treaties/en/ShowResults.jsp?treaty_id=15.
US Registration: However, you may wish to register your work with the US Copyright Body in case someone breaches your copyright and you wish to go down the path of litigation.
To explain further - Under U.S. law, you receive nominal protection without registration, but that protection means little without the ability to actually invoke that protection. MBS Press can help you register your copyright so you can recover attorneys' fees and statutory damages (since it is hard to show the monetary damage done by infringement, U.S. law allows that damages may be collected by the showing of infringement). Without registration, you cannot even file a lawsuit, and you do not receive attorneys' fees and statutory damages against infringements that occur before registration.
The only way to fully protect your work is to register it with the U.S. Copyright Office. The process for U.S. Copyright Registration requires paperwork and registration which we are able to do on your behalf.
PLEASE NOTE: US Authors - the cost for you to undertake your own Copyright registration in the US is far cheaper than to use our service. We are happy to help you to undertake this process yourself and gain signifcant savings. The links below will give you background information on the process and the necessary US copyright office.
If you wish MBS Press to undertake this service then please note the following:
